I often run into day-trippers at the Gökçeada (Imbros) pier, and most of the time I see the same scene: excitement, but no plan. Last summer, a family I chatted with on the deck of the morning ferry had already bought their return ticket but hadn't arranged a car — and they didn't really know where to go. When I found them at the same café in the town center at noon, they were on their third cup of tea. That's why I wrote this post.

In a Nutshell
  • Kabatepe–Gökçeada ferry takes about 1 hour 15–30 minutes; with the morning sailing, you arrive on the island around 08:30
  • In one day, you can visit 3–4 spots — renting a car is almost essential
  • Entry to Kastro castle ruins and Aydıncık Beach is free
  • Book your return ticket in advance; summer weekends sell out fast
  • One day isn't enough to see the whole island, but it gives you a good taste

Ferry & First Steps: Arriving on the Island

You'll depart from Kabatepe. If you take the morning ferry, you'll arrive at Kuzu Limanı around 08:30. The ferry crossing takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes — it varies with sea conditions, but it's usually calm in summer. When the island's silhouette comes into view, everyone on deck stands up and looks; watching that moment every time is a special pleasure.

If you don't book your return ticket in advance in midsummer, you might find yourself in a tight spot. On July–August weekends, ferry capacity fills up very quickly. You can use gdu.com.tr for online tickets. If you're traveling with a vehicle, I recommend booking at least a week ahead.

Car Rental: Almost Essential

Municipal buses go to some villages, but they're insufficient for a day trip. The Aydıncık (Kefalos) line has only 4 runs per day; there's no minibus to Marmaros Cove at all. Several car rental companies operate on the island. In summer, cars can be booked up early in the morning, so a reservation may be necessary.

Morning Stop: Kaleköy & Kastro

One morning I realized that when you get to Kastro early, around 09:30–10:00, you're almost alone in history — tourist groups haven't arrived yet, and you only hear your own footsteps among the stones. Don't miss this early hour.

Aşağı Kaleköy & Yukarı Kaleköy: Two Different Worlds

Kaleköy actually consists of two distinct layers. Aşağı Kaleköy (Lower Kaleköy) is a lively coastal village with fishing boats, a few restaurants, and a small marina vibe; Yukarı Kaleköy (Upper Kaleköy, Kastro) has a completely different atmosphere with its stone streets, Byzantine castle ruins, and sweeping Aegean views. Most visitors only see one; planning both takes time, but seeing the contrast is worth it.

Entry to Kastro is free. The walk among the ruins is short, but the ground is rocky — sturdy shoes are a must. On a clear day, you can see Samothrace Island from here; that view stays with you for a long time. New buildings in the village must use stone materials, which helps preserve the Aegean character.

Lunch Break: Zeytinliköy or Tepeköy

After Kaleköy, two options stand out for lunch. In Zeytinliköy, Mina Cafe is known for its organic serpme kahvaltı (spread breakfast) and dibek kahvesi (mortar-pounded coffee); it can get crowded in summer, so if you're going for lunch, it's worth asking about availability in advance. At Mustafa'nın Kayfesi in Tepeköy, you sit under 600-year-old plane trees — this experience has its own weight.

Parking can be tricky at both spots; go knowing this. Locals usually eat lunch at home, but village taverns offer short, satisfying lunch menus.

Afternoon: Beach or Nature?

The choice for the afternoon is yours — but make it before you finish your meal, because the two main options are in opposite directions.

Aydıncık Beach

Imbros' longest beach — with 1200 meters of sandy shore, it's the island's best-equipped beach area. Entry is free; there's a fee if you want to rent sunbeds and umbrellas. Aydıncık Beach stands out both for its family-friendly nature and its surfing winds. During surf season, it takes on a special vibrancy.

Marmaros Cove

For those wanting a nature-focused day, Marmaros Cove offers a different option. You need to take a dirt road branching off from Derekköy for about 7 km. The road is rocky and rough, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Entry is free, but there are no facilities in the area — you must bring enough food and drink. The waterfall and cove together make for a lovely afternoon.

3 Alternative Routes for Different Focuses

There's no single right route. You can shape your day based on what you want to see:

  • General route: Rent car → Kaleköy (Kastro) → Zeytinliköy lunch → Aydıncık Beach → return to Kuzu Limanı
  • Nature-focused: Rent car → Marmaros Waterfall → Marmaros Cove → Derekköy → return to Kuzu Limanı
  • History-focused: Rent car → Kaleköy (Kastro) → Tepeköy → rock tombs → return to Kuzu Limanı
  • Sea-focused: Rent car → Aydıncık → boat tour (schedule varies by operator and season; ask locally)

Each route requires a private vehicle. Only the Kaleköy line has regular municipal bus service. For ferry schedules and up-to-date island transport info, asking at the pier or car rental points is the most reliable way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you visit Gökçeada in one day?

Yes, it's possible. You arrive on the island around 08:30 on the morning ferry from Kabatepe; you can return on the evening ferry. With about 8–10 hours of active sightseeing, you can see 3–4 spots. That's not enough to see the whole island, but it gives you a general idea.

Is renting a car necessary?

Practically, yes. The minibus runs regularly on the Kaleköy line; but there are only a few runs per day to Aydıncık, and no minibus goes to Marmaros. Without a car, a day trip is severely limited. Booking in summer is recommended.

Should I buy ferry tickets in advance?

Definitely for the return ticket. On July–August weekends, ferry capacity fills up very quickly. For vehicle travel, you may need to book at least a week ahead. Online tickets are available at gdu.com.tr.

Is there an entrance fee for Kaleköy Kastro?

No. Kastro and the surrounding walking areas are free. The village streets and viewpoints can be explored freely.

How early should I get to the pier for the return?

In summer, especially on weekends, I recommend arriving at Kuzu Limanı pier at least 45–60 minutes early. With a vehicle, the car queue can get long — coming early doesn't cause stress, but coming late does. Check the current ferry schedules before your trip.
