Little Governor Zeynep Yılmaz Takes the Seat in Gökçeada
Governor's Seat Goes to Little Zeynep on April 23 in Gökçeada
This year, Gökçeada celebrated April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day with a meaningful handover ceremony at the district governor's office. Governor Osman Acar handed over his seat to Zeynep Yılmaz, a 4th-grade student at Yenibademli Primary School.
The most touching moment of the ceremony, held at the governor's building, was when little Zeynep sat in the governor's chair. Taking her symbolic role seriously, Zeynep Yılmaz didn't just go through the motions—she spoke up, shared her thoughts about the district, and extended her greetings for April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day to all children, especially those in Gökçeada.
Governor Acar: "Children Are the Future of the Country"
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Osman Acar emphasized the special significance of holding such an event on the anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Stating that these symbolic handover ceremonies on the day gifted to children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk are a concrete reflection of society's value placed on children, Acar said:
"Our children are the future of this country. Raising them well is a shared responsibility for all of us."
A Snapshot from the Island's Traditional Celebration
In a small, tightly-knit island community like Gökçeada, such ceremonies hold a special place. The symbolic transfer of the governor's seat to a child is seen as the simplest expression of adults' respect and trust in children. For families and visitors on the island, these moments turn the abstract rhetoric of April 23 into a concrete, face-to-face experience.
The program concluded with commemorative photos. Little Governor Zeynep Yılmaz will likely remember this special day for years to come.
