In a Nutshell
  • Gökçeada's longest beach: ~1,200 meters of fine sand
  • Free entry; sunbed and umbrella rental 30–50 TL/day
  • ~300 days a year with ideal wind conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing
  • Salt Lake right behind — mud bath, flamingos, and rare geology
  • Camping from 50 TL/night for tents; designated caravan areas available

When I spent my first summer on Gökçeada (Imbros), I didn't research Kefalos — as I drove down the southern road and the shore appeared, the car stopped on its own. Its name varies — Aydıncık, Kefaloz, Kefalos — but the feeling is always the same: a gentle breeze, the softness of wet sand underfoot, and an endless expanse of light blue. This is the island's busiest beach, and for good reason.

About 11 km from the town center, a 15-minute drive. As you pass through olive groves and descend into the bay, the Salt Lake appears first, then the beach. The two are almost adjacent — you can visit both in the same morning.

Where Is Kefalos Beach and How to Get There?

The beach is on the southeast of the island near Eselek village, GPS coordinates 40.1283836, 25.9409617. You can enter it directly into your navigation. In summer, minibuses run on the town–Eselek line; off-season, you'll need a private car or taxi. Parking is available, but if you arrive after 10 AM in July–mid-August, finding a spot is genuinely tough — I wanted to warn you in advance. When planning your trip, be sure to check ferry schedules, as ferries fill up especially on weekends.

The beach is about 1,200 meters long, with fine, golden sand. The sea has a gentle entry and is mostly calm — the wind blows but waves rarely form. The water deepens slowly, so small children can enter comfortably.

Windsurfing and Kitesurfing: The Islanders' Pride

One morning, walking early on the right side of the beach, I tried to count over a dozen colorful sails dancing on the water. The wind blows steadily and evenly, with no sudden gusts — this makes Kefalos suitable even for beginner surfers. As Alaçatı gets crowded, it's no rumor that Bulgarian and Romanian surfers are heading this way — you can now see different license plates in front of the schools yourself.

About 300 days a year offer ideal wind conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Seeing sails on the shore even in mid-winter proves this number isn't exaggerated. The double tombolo geomorphology separates the Salt Lake from the sea, creating a unique microclimate here — the wind is predictable and consistent. You can also explore other island activities, especially in September when the sea is still warm.

Wind Conditions and Best Season

Surf schools are generally active from April to November, but Kefalos wind doesn't stop even in winter. Private lesson fees range from 170–400 TL/hour depending on the school and season. Before you go, I recommend checking the Gökçeada weather page for wind speed and direction — especially useful for kitesurf planners.

Gökçeada Kefalos - Salt Lake and flamingos

Salt Lake: Another World Behind the Beach

Late last summer, in early September, I went early and found the beach empty. I walked across the sand to the Salt Lake. The water had evaporated, leaving a dark brown, mineral-rich mud underneath. A few people were applying it to their bodies and waiting, so I tried it too. Half an hour later, I washed off in the sea — it's hard to deny that my skin felt different.

The lake's geological history is also fascinating: the surrounding layers date back 5 million years or more, to the Miocene-Messinian period. Silicified tree fossils have also been documented here. But the most striking sight right now is the flamingos — the nutrient-rich salty waters of the Salt Lake host flamingos, wild ducks, and black-winged stilts. Don't forget to look around when you go for a mud bath.

Camping and Accommodation: Budget-Friendly Options

There are several camping options around the beach. At Fengari Hotel, tent camping is 50 TL/night, caravan 100 TL, room 180 TL. Surf Inn offers tent, caravan, and bungalow options with electricity, shower, and toilet facilities. Campsites are generally open from May to October.

Well-organized areas for caravanners are available — you can follow the growth of this segment on social media; also check out other accommodation options on Gökçeada. Locals usually prefer early June: the sea is swimmable but the beach is still quiet.

Honest Review: There Are Downsides Too

The middle of the beach is almost entirely filled with businesses. In peak season, you'll need to head to the edges to set up your own umbrella — otherwise, renting a sunbed is unavoidable. There have been complaints about sewage smell at times, especially on hot, calm days. The public beach at the far left end has no showers or toilets; this shortcoming has been mentioned by multiple users and is a real issue.

Parking is the most annoying detail — come early in the morning or choose early June or late September. During those times, the beach is calm and there's no queue. In winter it's deserted, but that's also nice for surfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an entrance fee for Kefalos Beach?

No, entry is completely free. Sunbed and umbrella rental is 30–50 TL/day. You can find free spots with your own gear at the edges of the beach; however, in July–mid-August, these areas can fill up. Coming early or choosing the start or end of the season is the most practical solution.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, very suitable. The sea has a gentle entry and is generally calm. The sand is fine and soft. Thanks to the slowly deepening seabed, small children can enter comfortably; among the island's beaches, this is the most accessible for families.

How do you take a mud bath in the Salt Lake?

You can walk to the Salt Lake right behind the beach. In summer, as the water evaporates, mineral-rich mud remains underneath. Apply it to your body, wait 15–20 minutes, then wash off in the sea. It is said to be good for psoriasis, rheumatism, and arthritis. While taking a mud bath, you can also observe flamingos and wild birds.

How much does a surf lesson cost?

It varies by school and season: private lessons range from 170–400 TL/hour. At Gökçeada Kitesurf School, an IKO-certified 7-hour basic course is 1,000 TL, and a 9-hour Level 1+2 course is 1,600 TL. Radikal Surf, Çelik Surf Center, and Volkite Kiteboard also offer both training and equipment rental.

When is the best time to visit?

For swimming, July–August is ideal, but that's also the busiest period. Early June or late September offers a good balance of sea temperature and tranquility. For surfing, it's worth coming year-round — about 300 days a year have favorable wind conditions. Winter is quiet, but attractive for surf enthusiasts. For those wanting to learn to surf in Gökçeada, the Aydıncık area is an ideal choice. Those looking for alternatives to Kefalos Beach can also check out other beaches on Gökçeada.
