When I first came to Gökçeada (Imbros), I panicked when my phone had no signal in Tepeköy. I have to say, things haven't changed much since then. In the town center you can easily watch videos on 4G, but as you head into the villages, the signal drops significantly. In this guide, I'll tell you everything you need to know before coming to the island — what kind of signal to expect in each area, that infamous Greece roaming bill issue, and how to be prepared in villages with no internet.
Quick Facts Signal in town center | 4G/4.5G stable on most operators Signal in villages | Significantly weak or drops out Roaming risk | Greek signal on north and west coasts Fixed internet | VDSL/Fiber in town center (8-50 Mbps) WiFi access | Available in hotels/cafés in town center and Kaleköy Recommendation | Manual operator selection + download offline maps
Signal Status by Area
Gökçeada base station GSM coverage
Here's the general picture: in the town center (Çınarlı) and its immediate surroundings, most major operators offer 4G/4.5G. Even while eating at Çınar Restaurant in the center, your internet won't cut out. Heading toward Kaleköy, the signal drops to 3G levels. In villages like Tepeköy, Dereköy, Eşelek, Uğurlu, and Yenibademli, the signal is either very weak or nonexistent. It can vary greatly from village to village — regardless of which operator you use, you may experience issues in rural areas.
Center (Çınarlı): 4G/4.5G — stable on most operators ✓
Kaleköy: 3G-4G — variable
Tepeköy / Dereköy: Weak signal — even SMS can be difficult
Eşelek / Uğurlu / Yenibademli: Very weak or none — high risk of Greek signal
The Greece Roaming Trap: An International Bill in Your Own Country
Greece roaming warning on phone
This is the most annoying issue on Gökçeada. The island is only 30-40 km as the crow flies from the Greek islands of Samothrace and Lemnos. Especially on the north and west coasts — around Uğurlu, Yenibademli, and Eşelek — your phone can silently connect to a Greek base station. The international roaming charges then show up on your bill as a nasty surprise.
To protect yourself from this risk, I recommend the following steps:
Phone → Settings → Mobile Networks → Network Operators → Turn off "Automatic selection", manually select your operator
In the same menu, turn off "Data Roaming"
If you have a postpaid plan, call your operator and ask them to block international usage — usually free of charge
If the signal behaves strangely, toggle Airplane Mode on and off to refresh the network
Start making these settings on the ferry, because once you arrive on the island, you might forget.
WiFi and Fixed Internet: Where Can You Connect?
WiFi internet connection
In the town center and Kaleköy, most hotels and guesthouses offer free WiFi. While staying at Fengari Hotel in Kaleköy, you can easily connect to the internet. Don't expect internet at beach campsites or stone houses in rural villages — that's part of their charm anyway.
Fixed internet infrastructure in the center offers VDSL/Fiber speeds of 8-50 Mbps. In the villages, the infrastructure is much more limited, and in some places nonexistent. During summer, the existing infrastructure gets even more strained due to tourist crowds.
If you're planning to camp on Gökçeada, keep in mind that internet access may be limited.
If you check the weather forecast before coming to the island, you can prepare better for your trip.
Digital Detox: Turn the Lack of Internet into an Opportunity
Digital detox - vacation without internet
Gökçeada is one of Turkey's few digital detox destinations. Walking among the stone houses in Tepeköy, the lack of phone signal doesn't bother you — on the contrary, it's relaxing. But if the idea of being completely disconnected makes you uneasy, come prepared with offline backups:
Download the Gökçeada map in advance from Google Maps or Maps.me — navigation won't work on village roads
Save music and podcasts to your phone beforehand
WhatsApp calls work over hotel WiFi
For urgent tasks, use the WiFi at cafés in the center
Especially if you're into activities like windsurfing, you might not even notice the lack of internet.
