- Book August reservations weeks in advance — capacity fills very early
I woke up one morning in northern Gökçeada, in front of the Kaleköy pier, to the sound of scuba divers entering the water. We had spent the night on a sailboat; looking over the deck, I could see the boat's shadow even ten meters below — the water was that clear. In that moment, I understood better why this island is home to Turkey's only underwater national park.
Underwater National Park: What, Where, When?
The Gökçeada Underwater National Park was established in 1999 by TUDAV (Turkish Marine Research Foundation) — not by a government decree, but as a protected area created by researchers' dedication to the island. Centered on Yıldız Koyu, this zone extends about 200 meters from the shore. It hosts over 180 plant and animal species: octopus, sea urchins, Posidonia meadows, coralligenous habitats, and if you're lucky, the Mediterranean monk seal.
Because the island sits at the meeting point of the Black Sea and Mediterranean water masses, the biodiversity is extraordinary. Imagine two different seas moving through the same corridor; the food chain is richer, species density higher. Even repeat divers note this.
Park Rules and Diving Regulations
Within park boundaries, organized diving requires guidance and permission from an authorized center. Snorkeling is possible for free exploration in Yıldız Koyu's buffer zone — but no solo deep diving. This is a rule, not an arbitrary restriction; anyone who knows what's in the waters wouldn't dive without permission anyway. An official Underwater Trail has been set up in Yıldız Koyu with a guide; visitors can observe marine life in situ, without touching.
Two Dive Centers, Two Different Characters

There are currently two active dive centers on the island. Most visitors who come without knowing this only hear about one — but the two are in different locations and operate with different philosophies.
Gökçeada Dive Center — Kaleköy
The Kaleköy base is on Fatih Mahallesi Barbaros Caddesi. It operates with a maximum of 4 people per session — showing they genuinely want to teach diving in small groups. If you want to shop in Kaleköy, stop by Alcan Shop on Fatih Mahallesi. It is recognized as the official intermediary for the Underwater National Park; boat access to all park points is provided from here. If you're staying in Kaleköy, it's within walking distance.
DIVEPARK — Aydıncık (Kefaloz) Beach
A different location on the island's west coast, at Aydıncık Beach. Authorized by TSSF for CMAS and SSI certifications; it adopts a one-on-one training model and doesn't work with large groups. Café, sun loungers, and lodge service are also available — a suitable base for those who want to combine a beach day before or after diving. It's one of the rare spots without parking issues, which is an extra advantage.

Dive Sites: Yıldız Koyu and Mavi Köy

Yıldız Koyu is accessible by car; there's a staircase down to the sea in the cove. Locals have known this cove for years — though it gets crowded in midsummer, the waters stay cool. What you'll see underwater depends largely on the season: In May there's a chance to spot sperm whales, while in September–October visibility peaks.
Getting to Mavi Köy takes a bit more effort. Two options: about 15 minutes by boat from Kaleköy, or about 45 minutes on foot along a steep, rocky path from Yıldız Koyu. As someone who tried the second route, let me say — even those who know the way step carefully. Don't go without sturdy shoes. But the view is worth it.
The eastern and northern coasts of Imbros are more exposed to deep water circulation; the water can be surprisingly clear at times, but currents can also strengthen. When planning a dive, it's essential to ask the center for current conditions — rather than trusting a fixed schedule, it's better to call in the morning.
Dive Options by Level
Even if you have no diving experience, you can still enter the water in Gökçeada. But you need to know which option suits you:
- Baptism dive (introductory dive): Ages 14 and up, swimming not required. Parental consent needed for under 18. Underwater portion 20–25 minutes, total about 2–2.5 hours including briefing and preparation.
- TSSF/CMAS 1* course: Beginner certification; internationally valid in over 130 countries.
- CMAS 2*–3* and SSI advanced courses: For deeper and independent diving. SSI certifications are also available at DIVEPARK.
- Snorkeling: Possible without a guide in Yıldız Koyu's buffer zone; you can follow the underwater trail from the surface.
During the summer season, especially in August, capacities fill up quickly. Many visitors who learn this find no last-minute spots. Book at least 1–2 days in advance; if planning for August, think weeks ahead.
| Info | Details |
|---|---|
| Season | April–October (September–October best visibility) |
| Minimum age | 14 (baptism dive) |
| Dive duration | ~2–2.5 hours (underwater: 20–25 min) |
| Yıldız Koyu access | By car |
| Mavi Köy access | Boat (15 min) or trail hike (45 min) |
| Fee | Both centers charge; call for current prices |
| Cancellation risk | Possible during July–August meltemi; check ahead |
The meltemi wind can prevent diving on some days — check the Gökçeada weather in advance. After diving, I recommend checking out the island's other activities; hiking trails and route walks and bike routes combine nicely with the Yıldız Koyu area.

No. No certification is required for a baptism (introductory) dive. Anyone aged 14 and over can participate; swimming ability is not mandatory. Parental consent is required for participants under 18.
Which months can you dive in Gökçeada?
Dive centers are generally open from April to October. For the highest visibility and calmest seas, September–October is recommended. In May–June, there's a chance to spot sperm whales. In July–August, meltemi winds may cancel dives on some days; it's best to ask ahead.
How long does a baptism dive take, and when should I book?
The underwater portion is 20–25 minutes; with brief training and preparation, it totals about 2–2.5 hours. Since capacities fill quickly in summer, book at least 1–2 days in advance. If planning for August, you may need to book weeks ahead.
