  • Marmaros Beach is a pristine, facility-free cove on the island's north coast, behind Dereköy.
  • 7 km dirt road; accessible by regular car but SUV/4x4 recommended.
  • No facilities: no showers, toilets, or sunbeds — bring everything you need.
  • Camping allowed; stock up on supplies in Dereköy.
  • The road is occasionally closed during forest fire season; check before you go.

Gökçeada's northern shores have a different character from the calm coves in the south. The north wind blows openly here, making the sea more energetic. But Marmaros Beach doesn't quite follow this rule — the surrounding pine forest and the cove's layout keep it relatively sheltered even on windy days. And that's why, despite the challenging access, people come here for the most independent beach experience on the island.

Just past Dereköy, you turn right onto a dirt road at the village's edge. You drive seven kilometers through pine trees, and finally stop above the cove. Below: a rocky shore, clear water, not a single facility. The simplest form of island life.

Where Is Marmaros Beach?

On the north coast of Gökçeada, a cove neighboring Dereköy. About 30 km from the town center — 30-40 minutes by car. Coordinates: 40.193413, 25.754449.

The last 7 km to the cove is a dirt road. The road is occasionally closed to traffic during summer as a forest fire precaution. It's a good habit to check the current status from the Gökçeada Municipality or local social media groups before you go. Also plan your ferry schedule accordingly.

How to Get There

  • From Gökçeada town center, head toward Dereköy
  • After passing Dereköy, turn right onto the dirt road at the village's end
  • Drive 7 km along the dirt road — vehicle clearance matters
  • Possible with a standard sedan but difficult; SUV or high-clearance vehicle recommended
  • No public transport; you'll need a rental car or transfer

Beach Features

Marmaros is a completely natural, untouched cove. The shore is made of stones and pebbles; there's some fine sand in spots. The sea is clear, with depth increasing gradually — the entry area is suitable for children but supervision is essential.

The cove's biggest draw is its pristine nature. No settlements, no facilities, no vendors. Food, water, sunscreen, umbrella, mat — you won't find any of these here. The nearest shopping is in Dereköy.

Camping: The Real Appeal of Marmaros

While the lack of facilities puts off most visitors, Marmaros is exactly what campers are looking for. A secluded campsite in the shade of pine forest, right by the sea, with no one around — it's hard to find anything like this elsewhere on the island.

  • Get water, food, and fuel from markets in Dereköy or the town center beforehand
  • Fires are banned during forest fire season — check the governor's current decisions
  • No toilet facilities; follow Leave No Trace principles
  • Flat areas suitable for setting up tents are located at the upper part of the cove
  • Light pollution is very low at night — Milky Way observation is possible in summer

Connection to Marmaros Waterfall

Separate from the beach, you can reach Marmaros Waterfall via an approximately 1-hour hike from the upper dirt road. In winter and spring, the waterfall's flow increases, making the scenery more impressive. Its flow decreases in midsummer. It's possible to combine a beach visit with the waterfall on the same day — but you'll need to get up early. Also check out our Marmaros Waterfall guide.

Best Time to Visit

Early June and September are ideal. In July-August, the island gets crowded, but Marmaros remains quieter than other beaches due to its lack of facilities. In winter and spring, the road can be muddy; if you're going for the waterfall, April-May is the best period.
