Uğurlu Village Guide: Gökçeada's Quiet Southwest
- Uğurlu Village is 25 km from Gökçeada town center — 30 minutes by car
- Beach and Gizli Liman (Hidden Harbor) entrance is free; sunbeds 200-400 TL
- 8,800-year-old Uğurlu-Zeytinlik Mound: the Aegean's oldest farming settlement
- ~20 guesthouses/apartments, nightly 1,500-5,000 TL
- The village's signature dish: kid goat tandır
At the southwestern tip of Gökçeada (Imbros), there's a village that feels slightly disconnected from the rest of the island: Uğurlu. Every time I go there, I feel the same thing — time moves a little slower here. Being 25 km from the center makes Uğurlu one of the quietest corners of the island. Even in mid-July, you can find room to breathe on the beach, which can't be said for the northern shores.
Uğurlu was founded in 1984 as a resettlement village for families from Burdur, Muğla, and Erzincan. These families, displaced by dam projects, now make a living from livestock and tourism. Beneath the village lies a much older layer: an 8,800-year-old Neolithic settlement. But I'll get to that shortly.
The Village Atmosphere and Daily Life

You reach Uğurlu via Tepeköy. Along the way, the scenery changes, with olive groves and oak scrub accompanying you. Entering the village, the first thing you'll notice is the orderly streets and orange-roofed houses. Traces of Greek-era architecture can still be seen on some buildings.
Last summer, I took a friend to a guesthouse here. "Is this a village or a holiday resort?" she asked. She had a point — the houses are well-maintained, the gardens tidy. But it's not a resort; the villagers tend to their animals in winter and their guests in summer. The population of about 549 multiplies in summer.
The village square has a mosque, a few grocery stores, and a tea garden. Locals usually gather at the tea garden in the late afternoon. During the BIFED Film Days, an open-air cinema screening for 200 people was even held here.
Uğurlu Beach and Gizli Liman (Hidden Harbor)

Uğurlu Beach
A roughly 300-meter-long fine sandy shore you can walk down from the village. Behind it is a pine forest, providing natural shade. Entrance is free. If you want to rent a sunbed and umbrella, it's 200-400 TL.
A few things I should mention: No Blue Flag, no lifeguard. The waves are usually calm because it faces south and is sheltered from northern winds. That's why families prefer it. But keep your expectations low regarding facilities — it scores 4.3 on TripAdvisor, with most complaints about lack of amenities. Parking is tight, but the sea is so worth it that no one complains too much.
Gizli Liman (Hidden Harbor)
Go 3 km further from Uğurlu, and you'll reach Turkey's westernmost point. A 750-meter-long golden sandy beach with not a single structure on it. You'll watch the sunset here last in the country — this detail may sound cliché, but it's truly a different experience. You can get shower, toilet, and charging services from 2 cafes.
Free camping is allowed at Gizli Liman. Pitch your tent, light a fire, swim in the morning. It's quiet in winter, but that's another kind of beauty.
An 8,800-Year-Old Neighbor: Uğurlu-Zeytinlik Mound
1 km north of the village lies the earliest known farming settlement in the Aegean Islands. Identified in 1998 and excavated since 2009 under Prof. Dr. Burçin Erdoğu, this site elevates Imbros's place in history to another level.
Excavations have revealed 6 cultural layers (6800-4300 BC). Five Neolithic house structures with round plans, sunken floors, and reed-mud techniques were found. Wheat, barley, lentil remains, and domesticated animal bones — the first pages of humanity's transition to agriculture in the Aegean were written here.
Along with Crete, this site is the earliest settlement in the Aegean Islands and is key to understanding how Neolithic life spread to Europe. It can be visited outside the excavation season. None of the competing sites cover this mound in detail — it's one of Gökçeada's least known but most valuable historical spots.
Where to Stay and What to Eat

Accommodation
The village has about 20 guesthouses and apartments. All are family-run with a warm atmosphere. Nightly prices range from 1,500 to 5,000 TL (depending on the season). A few examples:
- Güll Apart Motel — Standard rooms and 2+1 apartments, with its own restaurant
- Uğurlu Apart Otel — Ranked 2nd on TripAdvisor, 10 apartments
- Kardelen Çamlık Pansiyon — In the Çamlık area, close to the beach
- Şen Pansiyon — Near the sea, 2+1 and 1+1 apartments
Early booking is essential for July-August. In May-June and September, prices are more affordable and the village is quieter.
Camping
The Muhtarlık Çamlık Camping Area is within walking distance of the sea. You can also pitch a tent for free at Gizli Liman. Other camping spots are available in the village.
Local Flavors
Don't leave Uğurlu without trying kid goat tandır. Lamb tandır is also available, but kid goat is the real deal here. I had the best tandır on the island here — a bold claim, but I'm right. There are also places offering village breakfast — organic honey, olive oil, fresh cheese. Don't expect fancy cafes like in Zeytinliköy, but the flavors are just as good.
